Station Eleven

Author: Emily St. John Mandel

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Genres: Science Fiction, Dystopia, Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

A devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

In this story, we follow a few characters on their lives before the pandemic arrived, when it occurred, and what happened to them after.

Definitely don't read this now if you have anxiety from our current COVID-19 pandemic.

When I first started reading this, I was very intrigued because I had not yet read apocalyptic stories that hit so close to home, without any supernatural elements like zombies. What made this story so much more interesting was we go back and forth between characters, and somehow the characters link to one another in some form, so it's fun to guess who they're describing by linking the objects they have.

However, I expected more from this story. By the end, it seems like there are still so many loose ends. The characters eventually encounter one another at the end, but it takes so long to get there. Apart from the fun in guessing which characters are linked to one another, the characters are not very fleshed out.

At the end, we don't know whether or how this post-apocalyptic period will end. We can only guess. The characters continue with their lives, which left me feeling deeply unsatisfied because what was the point of this book then, after spending so much time in this world with characters that are not even fleshed out? Which is why, 3 stars.
